REQ.21 – Energy Services Provider Interface

The NAESB Energy Services Provider Interface Model Business Practices Information Page

The North American Energy Standards Board (NAESB) Energy Services Provider Interface (ESPI) Model Business Practices were developed in 2011 through a request from the industry and with the support of Department of Energy, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The Model Business Practices define a data exchange protocol for the transfer of energy usage information between a utility and a third party with customer authorization. The industry-consensus standard serves as the basis for “Green Button” implementations throughout North America and is the standard endorsed and supported by the Green Button Alliance (GBA).

The Green Button Initiative was launched in 2011 by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The initiative spurred electric utilities throughout the country to provide customers with easy access to their energy usage data in a consumer-friendly and computer-friendly format through a “Green Button” provided on electric utilities’ websites and apps. The utility industry responded by providing Green Button implementations throughout the U.S., and today, energy usage data is now made available through the Green Button to 60 million U.S. households, altogether 100 million people, and nearly 3 million customers in Canada.

NAESB and the GBA have been working together since the GBA’s formation in 2015 to support the original mission of the Green Button Initiative and have entered into a collaborative working relationship to ensure that the industry has a path forward for the adoption and certification of Green Button implementations.

The NAESB Commitment to the Green Button Initiative

NAESB is a non-profit standards development organization formed in 1994 by the energy industry to serve as a forum for the development and promotion of standards that support the wholesale and retail natural gas and electric markets. To serve its charter and continue its work, the organization is funded by its voluntary members and through the sale of its copyright protected standards and work products, including the ESPI Model Business Practices. Through an arrangement with the GBA, the NAESB Board of Directors have provided a one-time exception to the NAESB Copyright Policy for the schemas contained within the copyright protected ESPI Model Business Practices to the industry under the Apache 2.0 license.
